CCPS Security Project Reaches First Milestones

Scott Berger, CCPS, Special Contributor

In November 2001, CCPS launched a new project to address Chemical Site Security. The project has team members from over 20 CCPS sponsor companies, and close ties to initiatives of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and the Synthetic Organic Chemicals Manufacturing Association (SOCMA).

Recently, CCPS completed its "Enterprise Screening Tool." This tool enables a corporation to focus its resources on improving security processes at higher priority sites. Using a simple spreadsheet, users answer questions about chemicals on site and the site's geographical location relative to population centers. The Enterprise Screening Tool will be used by ACC as part of their Responsible Care Security Code, and will be available via the CCPS website.

Other aspects of the CCPS security project are also well underway, including the development of a security vulnerability analysis process and tools, and a website to publicly share the output of this project. The website can be found at www.aiche.org/ccpssecurity/
