WHAT IS CAL/VPP? It
is a certification program designed to recognize employers whose
occupational safety and health programs are exemplary and meet specific
Cal/VPP guidelines. It is recognized as a part of the nationwide VPP
program sponsored by FED-OSHA. WHO CAN APPLY FOR CAL/VPP? Those
qualified employers who desire recognition for outstanding achievements in
the development and implementation of their safety and health program. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS OF CAL/VPP? Cal/VPP
requirements include: management commitment, employee involvement, work
site analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health
training. These are similar
to work a site may have already done as a part of its Process Safety
Management activity. In fact,
you are about 70% done if your PSM systems are in place.
The applicant will submit documents to support the implementation
of Cal/VPP requirements and if the results of the onsite evaluation by
Cal/VPP team is satisfactory, the achievement certificate is awarded. WHAT IS THE ONSITE EVALUATION? It
is a verification of the effective implementation of Cal/VPP requirements
by the applicant. Note: If an employer has several sites, each location
will require a separate application. WHO DOES THE ONSITE EVALUATION? Safety
and Health consultants from the OSHA Consultation section. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Cal/VPP
services are provided at no cost to the applicant. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? Companies
that achieved VPP status indicated several advantages including:
recognition, increased employee involvement, improved quality and
productivity, partnership with government, reduction in injuries and
illnesses, and exemption from routine Cal/OSHA compliance inspections.
Many companies have said that the key to improving labor relations
is working together on this certification program. WHAT YOUR COMPANY SHOULD DO IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN RECEIVING MORE INFORMATION? In California, contact Iraj at 415 703 5270 or visit the website at CALOSHA Consultation. The national office of the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association (VPPPA) is another good source of information, as well as the Federal OSHA VPP Page.
