 Hot Work Permit

Hot work involves flame or spark-producing operations. It includes electric or gas welding, brazing, and other similar activities. The principal issue from a process safety standpoint is the threat of a fire from these activities. PSM typically requires documentation (in the U.S this takes the form of a permit) that fire prevention and protection activities have been implemented prior to these activities being started. It is an important issue, responsible for $1.6 billion in losses in the U.S.
over a ten-year period.
